THE FOOD STORAGE PROGRAM

President Spencer W. Kimball: "The little gardens and a few trees are very valuable. I remember when the sisters used to say, `well, but we could buy it at the store a lot cheaper than we could put it up.' But that isn't quite the answer, is it, Sister Spafford? Because there will become a time when there isn't a store." General Conference April 1974.

The purpose of this program is to help you determine your food storage wants and needs.

Similar foods are listed in groups. Choose items in each group that your family likes and would use on a regular basis. Suggested in the food groups are some one year minimums. You may wish to store more or less than the minimum for each group.

Besides the basic food essentials there are suggested other food items that you may wish to store. These items are very appropriate for food storage and give variety and versatility to your storage. Your family may be one that wouldn't be happy living on only powdered milk, whole wheat and honey for a year.

This list also contains items commonly included in other successful food storages. Contemplate a moment on each item to see how it could be useful to you, then determine the amount you would store.

Some non-food items are listed to fill the need for light, heat, medical supplies, clothing and the ability to repair or make new clothing, etc. Imagine not being able to replenish your supplies of these non-food items for at leat a year.

Canning and food storage supply items are listed, these allow you to replenish your storage during future hard times.

You should also consider having some emergency funds available including some money on hand in case there is a problem with the banks.

Warning, some of you older or single people think that you have to little need for food storage. This you must be careful to avoid. During times of distress you may find yourself needing much more than you now need. It may also be your opportunity to help others including family members who are not living with you, who were unable to get as prepared as you were.

Remember to ask the Lord to guide you in this very serious task. It is not one to be taken lightly. The prophets make it very clear that this commandment is essential, not only for your physical but also your spiritual welfare.

Use the blank space to the side of each item to help set your goals, then print out.
